I used to think I was a good writer. I used to think I was a really good writer and anything I wrote needed to be really good. I was 17 years old and I would get so. incredibly. stressed. about writing anything it would take me hours and drive me to tears.
It was really nice when I stopped worrying about writing. It really hit me when I realized that my timed essays were usually better than the ones I had to slog through at home. When I wanted to just get my idea across, my writing was much better than when I was trying to write something good.
Now I just write whatever, and whatever I write is probably fine. It's certainly better than what I used to get all stressed about.

Fog is when clouds get tired. Gets me tired.
This fog is getting overwhelming today. It's making my arms and my eyes feel heavy, and it's making me think my Thanksgiving travel plans are absolutely insane. I'm really really cold right now.

I am obsessed with advice columns. Just because.
Have you ever wondered if advice columnists sometimes answer the same letters? Like, someone with a question hedges their bets and sends out letters to more than one columnist?
LUCKILY I READ EVERY ADVICE COLUMN
and I've counted 3 times that it's happened in the last few months. This includes today's New York Times Social Q, which I believe was a Dear Prudence entry from several weeks ago.
Aren't you glad I keep track of these things.

I spent 40 minutes looking for my index cards
Today I studied for my art history exam for tomorrow. I was asked by 5 separate people why I was bothering to study.
Maybe I want to leeeeeeeeeearn.
And now I have.
Suck it, slacking.

Bunnies > sketches
Mindtrip of the day in class:
If the most important thing to you is reaching the most of people with your message, the art world is not the place to do it. You can put some pictures of cute bunnies on the internet and you'll get way more people to care about them than, say, about Cy Twombly's paintings.
WHOA. Truth.

Have you guys ever seen Hoodwinked? My older brother got it for my younger brother one year. My older brother and I watched it twice that day. Why? BECAUSE IT'S HILARIOUS.

I will learn his true scientific name and own him with it.
I don't like killing bugs. But there's this stupid little bugger who's decided to camp out in our room and has already flown in front of my face mockingly 3 times since I started writing this post.
So I tried to catch him.
AND I SUCCEEDED.
But then I opened my hand and he was still alive.

Just in case his chain gets too hot.
Today I walked down the street and I saw a guy with oven mitts attached to his belt. They were lime green.
My first reaction was 'awesome. he has oven mitts on his belt.'
But if you work in a restaurant, why would you bring your own oven mitts?
And if you're wearing a backpack why wouldn't you just keep them in your backpack?
And why do they look so clean?
So I think this guy was just wearing them as a fashion accessory.
Welcome back, blog.

Scenario
If Michelle Bachmann were a Buddhist monk she would fail at meditation. She would be saying her prayers and would interrupt everyone with the first thought that hit her.
If her teacher tried instruct her with some wise parable, she would grumble and then think about how much she hated him. Then she would attempt to meditate and have a revelation about her teacher being evil. This revelation, since it happened while she was meditating, becomes her moment of enlightenment and she is convinced that it is an absolute truth and pure in its wisdom. She'd then interrupt everyone again with her "revelation".
Michelle Bachmann is an embarrassment to my state.

It may not be nice, but you do it
Do you ever look at people and try to figure out what facial or body feature they're secretly really self-conscious about? You can never tell them, of course, because if you're wrong then they just have a whole new complex.

Cosmo
You ever think the cover designers for Cosmo just sit there and giggle about their own layout?
:pffft. hahahaa. Look how big I can write sex. SEX. HAHAHAHHA I can't believe this is acceptable.
I would if I made it. They should really just retitle the magazine Cosmosexitan. They would sell more without having to think of a new gimmick.

Lesson from film.
TV and movies have taught me that if anything terrible ever happens to someone I care about, I will instantly know.
If I don't have a sinking or gasping feeling immediately strike me, then I don't really love them.

Science teacher
I think that if I were a science teacher, I would insert random "facts" that are completely wrong, just so it would be ingrained in them forever as pure, science teachery fact.
Like
"Well since water is polar, when you get into a bath or something it sucks the water out of your pores. That's why your skin feels dry a lot of the time after cleaning yourself."
Yeah. Do it.

Retrospect.
When I was in 8th grade I went to Washington DC with my class. On the way back I sat on the plane and drew pictures. I was just thinking about that for the first time in a long time.
I sat next to a guy who told me I was good. He told me I should think about going into art. I forgot about that guy until today, which is actually January 2nd. Today I submitted my first art school application.
Who would have thought I'd follow that advice?

Gum.
I get very frustrated buying gum. Mostly because I only chew whitening gum and not everywhere always has it. And really if I'm going through all the trouble of actually buying gum then I might as well buy whitening gum, and seriously I really only like the one kind anyway so....
Yeah it's a dumb problem.

Friends
Ever notice how however many facebook friends you have seems to be exactly the proper number? And more seems obscene and fewer seems paltry?
I've read like 3 articles lately about the middle-aged facebook trend (which I think is just lovely) and they've all said something along the lines of "who really has more than 75/150/230 friends?"
I know every person I'm friends with THANKS very much. Though know may be a loose term.

Awkward Adorable.
Walking down the street today I saw a guy who was a) not wearing a coat in cold windy weather and b) holding an awkward bundle.
That bundle was a baby! And it was awkward because he'd taken his coat off and wrapped the baby in it.
How adorable is that.
Then I saw a guy who only had dreadlocks in the bottom layers of his hair and it was short and spikeyish on top, and I was like that hair is more awkward than that baby bundle. At least that baby was adorable.

The death of MySpace.
Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for this but it needs to be said, if only to be ignored.
Now, I love facebook. I really do. But there was a time when I loved MySpace, I couldn't imagine my life without it.
Do you know what was the beginning of the death of MySpace?
Surveys. Surveys were the first sign of the apocalypse.
Please think before you write. Think about spambots and the future. Thank you.

Moment!
My apartment is a block away from the athletic complex. Across the street there was a guy standing there with a sign. He wasn't talking to anyone or looking around much,
just holding a sign that said
I NEED TICKETS
I walked across the street to my corner and saw another guy. He wasn't talking to anyone or looking around much,
just holding four tickets.
It was a little funny. I wonder how long it will take for either to turn his head.

Friends
I'm starting to feel like the only way to be really really friends with a person is to never, ever be even. Just continue trading favors back and forth, whether it be half a sandwich or a firstborn child. It's nice to be owed and to owe. It's a good excuse for a phone call.

Market
When the stock market first started way back when, it was just trading. Betting, really. It migrated around the world and rose to prominence. After some time it began to control the economy. Money makes the world go round, imaginary money makes it spin faster. All bets, gambling.
Ever wonder if there's a market on countries? Bets on what will go up or down...investments maybe, power maybe. I'm sure there's a market.

Bathnapkins?
So last year we redid our bathroom. It looks lovely, thanks for asking.
But my mom got these napkins that go with it, they match the bathmat and shower curtain and all that. Now, the trick of that is that napkins do not belong in a bathroom. Thus we've been stuck in a very confusing situation in which these pretty little mock-hand towels are in the bathroom but are never touched...I mean there are perfectly good (and also matching) towels right there. I bet I could count them all right now and not more than two would be gone before we redid the bathroom again.
UPDATE: There are 8 striped ones and 16 circley ones. I'm going to hazard a guess that they came in packs of 8.

Caffeineaaaaaaaaaah
OK kids, here's the thing.
So the goal this break was to quit caffeine. OK fine, reduce the caffeine intake. For those of you who don't religiously follow my drinking habits (which I hope is everyone) I was probably at like 6 cans of Diet Pepsi a day. OK fine 8.
So that was the goal, and let's be honest I failed. Because
a. I get headachey and mean when I'm decaffeinating
b. My natural sleep cycle seems to be about 10-14 hours a night and I have things I actually need to get done.
But I have been down to like a can a day. OK fine a bottle. BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.
So today during dinner (after I'd had my daily indulgence bottle already) I had another with dinner and drank it really fast. And then I started talking really fast. And gesturing rapidly.
WAIT STOP.
This is what I've been like for like all semester. OK fine like 3 years. Whoa dudes, sorry bout that I'm not quite that keyed up at normal level. I'm like 4 levels down on a scale of 20 probably. So I'm gonna legit cut down, that's what I decided. Okies?! Woo. This is long.

Food
The best way to try new foods is to get into a situation where it's impossible to refuse without being terribly impolite. I used to be a really really picky eater. Now? Not so much. I eat some good food though.
I just had a really good dinner. I made it myself though.

Benjamin
I haven't posted for a while. Here's a Ben quote:
Ben:
Ben:
"Meh.
I care just like I'm wearing pants right now
which is not at all
unless you count underwear
then it's kind of
because technically they're spandex."
Here's a BONUS quote for fun:
(While driving over the Mendota (?) bridge)
Ben: Ugh. I hate having to switch lanes on a bridge.
Especially when it's to go around an accident.
And there's a car with a remember the 35W bridge bumper sticker in front of me.
Wow."

Flying
The trickiest thing about flying is getting a good start. You need to jump into it with a clear head and clear intentions or else you'll just fall. This is especially tricky when being chased, and it takes even more concentration then. It really is wonderful though, and I highly recommend you try it.
